Other services include: logos, flyers, stationery, and literary tattoo design. My handwriting and calligraphy have always been an expression of something deep inside me–the desire to make things beautiful in whatever way I can through my connection to the written word. My love of beautiful writing began with Lloyd Reynolds in 1962 followed by graphic arts & design at Art Center College of Design, Los Angeles. I’ve been privileged to continue my education with many world class calligraphers, artists and illustrators. My career includes commercial art from design to sales, teaching workshops, commissions, and for the past 8 years I’ve been an associate working with Cliff Mansley of Heirloom Artists. This past year, with the blessings and assistance of Cliff, I opened my own studio, The Elegant Letter.  It is a full service studio providing calligraphy, illustration, creative design, gold & silver gilding and custom framing for both corporate and individual clients. Projects  large or small, I’d be happy to assist in creating a work of art to cherish.

Mission: to feed the soul by making meaningful words beautiful. As a third generation calligrapher, I have a deep appreciation for beautiful lettering and expressive artwork. Tutored initially by my mother in illustration and my father, Cliff Mansley of Heirloom Artists, in calligraphy I’ve learned to enhance both inspirational and Biblical texts with flourishes, florals, illustrations and colorful hand lettering. Often, I create my work on handmade papers or genuine calfskin and offer the option of 23k gold leaf, as well. Design categories have included: Handmade Leather-bound Books, Certificates & Awards, Family Trees, Greeting Card & Gift Market designs for publishers, Invitations, Logos, Commercial Lettering, Mission Statements, Quotations & Poems, lettering on Walls and more. Custom framing is available. You are invited to view samples in my website “PORTFOLIO” and a versatile line of reproductions in my website “SHOP.” An international clientele keeps me creating!

I am a creative visionary with an extensive background in personal photo organizing and management, graphic design, and black and white studio photography. Exposed to italic calligraphy in 2000 and re-igniting this passion in 2013 has got me excited for hand lettering and exposing this long lost craft to this technology based society. I am open and receptive to creating custom empowering calligraphy pieces from greeting cards, calligraphic logos, large ready-to-hang pieces, to recorded calligraphy video intro’s for photo slideshows. If my calligraphy speaks to you, please contact me to get your special project started.

Hiring a calligrapher

If you are not familiar with the art of calligraphy or have never commissioned work before, we offer these suggestions:

  1. Contact several calligraphers for a cost estimate for your particular job.
  2. You can ask to see samples of work related to the type you want to commission.
  3. Regarding your work arrangement, be specific in the following: Price, Completion date/turnaround time, Pickup/delivery options, Materials that will be used/ink, paper, colors, Pickup/delivery options, Minimum quantities needed for the job, etc.

Feel free to discuss the calligrapher’s background, experience and available references, and talk about the script and design elements you have been thinking about. Be sure to listen to the calligrapher for his or her suggestions, however. You must supply the calligrapher with a text that is legible and worded (and spelled) exactly as you want it to appear. When multiple items are involved, provide extra envelopes or certificates as a courtesy to the calligrapher. We love this art of beautiful writing and are pleased that you appreciate it also.
