Valley Presbyterian Church

The Portland Society for Calligraphy Board meetings are open to all members. At the meetings, the Board of Directors develops and carries out the Society’s policies and by-laws with the help of committees who report activities to the Board. While the Board reflects a diversity of calligraphic experience, everyone is devoted to the art. Whether you are a beginner or more experienced, we invite you to come to the next Board meeting and help the Society grow.

THE DOUBLE PRIMARY PALETTE

Now is your chance to explore the double primary palette with PSC board member and artist Ingrid Slezak. Ingrid will explain the uses of the double primary palette and show how we can mix beautiful colors and avoid mud. This is a great opportunity to experiment with color in one brief session.
Double Primary PalettePlease bring with you:

1) Media: watercolors or gouache – a warm red and a cool red, a warm yellow and a cool yellow, and a warm blue and a cool blue.

2) Tools: ruler, pencil, small palette, two brushes – one pointed, one flat, water jar and a couple of sheets (8 by 10 or so) of good paper.

Ingrid Slezak’s first foray into art was a two-year apprenticeship in ceramics in Munich, Germany in the 1960s. After 12 years as a professional potter, she left a Master’s program in ceramics to transfer to law school, and practiced law in Colorado and Oregon for 20 years before taking Carol DuBosch’s beginning calligraphy course at PCC in January 2004. Carol’s course inspired Ingrid to take more workshops, classes and conferences in calligraphy—while continuing to practice law—as well as explore book arts, letterpress, drawing, painting, etching and monotype printing. She was exposed to the double primary palette by Sheila Waters three years ago, and has spent hours mixing colors and making color charts. Having retired from practicing law, she has more time for art – at least when not in Toronto or Vancouver, BC with her two grandchildren.
