An Overview & Interpretations of Blackletter a.k.a. Gothic Hands with Anita Bigelow

In looking at the evolution of the many gothic hands, we’ll see some of their baggage from Ye Olde Monks, to Nazis and vampires. This presentation, originally made for a Reed Paideia workshop, comes with hopes that calligraphers of all experience levels will get past connotations to fun and expression with gothic hands.

Anita Bigelow’s first calligraphy teacher, Lloyd Reynolds, called blackletter the Christmas script, legible only seasonally. Anita found gothic hands a mere curiosity until an all too short class with Colleen Cavin revealed textura. Then came Luca Barcellona and Fraktur and — fast forward — internet exploration and her latest gothic love, Chaucerian Anglicana formata.

The Portland Society for Calligraphy Board meetings are open to all members. At the meetings, the Board of Directors develops and carries out the Society’s policies and by-laws with the help of committees who report activities to the Board. While the Board reflects a diversity of calligraphic experience, everyone is devoted to the art. Whether you are a beginner or more experienced, we invite you to come to the next Board meeting and help the Society grow.
