The Critical Practice Institute (CPI) is a program of the Douglas F. Cooley Memorial Art Gallery at Reed College. The CPI began as a professional development opportunity for Portland Public School teachers to integrate art and art history lessons into their curriculum. Since 2013, in partnership with Inga Dubay and the Portland Society for Calligraphy, the CPI has focused exclusively on letter arts; Italic handwriting, calligraphy, typography and paleography.

Join us for a year-end recap of the activities of the CPI during the 2015-2016 academic year as well as a discussion of how PSC members can become involved in the future.

Call For Entries

The non-juried PSC Member Exhibit will be held at the Justice Center in Portland from August 1-27, 2016. The artwork will be displayed in 3 large outside windows on SW Madison Street between 2nd & 3rd. Members may submit 3 pieces of calligraphic work (broadsides as well as books), both recent and older work is welcome. This is a chance to share calligraphy with a much wider world as the exhibit can be seen easily by pedestrians in the central city area.

Download the 4-page PDF PSC – Justice Center exhibit summary for all the information, guidelines, entry forms and display labels. Entry forms are due June 15th. The work must be delivered by July 15th.

The PSC Board of Directors will meet on May 24th 10:00 am – 12:00 noon in the Childrens’ Chapel at Trinity Episcopal Cathedral, 147 NW 19th Avenue in Portland. The agenda for the meeting will include a discussion of how PSC might increase its education and outreach to middle schools, high schools, college age students and young adults. All PSC members are invited to attend and participate in this discussion.

Parking at Trinity is available in the lot directly across 19th Avenue from the building or in the lot on the south side of the building.

The Portland Society for Calligraphy Board meetings are open to all members. At the meetings, the Board of Directors develops and carries out the Society’s policies and by-laws with the help of committees who report activities to the Board. While the Board reflects a diversity of calligraphic experience, everyone is devoted to the art. Whether you are a beginner or more experienced, we invite you to come to the next Board meeting and help the Society grow.
