February Member Meeting

Monday, February 13th at 7:00pm at Trinity Cathedral.

Address: 147 NW 19th Ave, Portland, OR 97209

Join us as Jennifer Rich from Oblation Papers & Press gives us a brief history of Oblation papers & press and talk about the art of making paper, parchment and walnut ink. If there’s anything that we love as calligraphers, it’s definitely beautiful paper! Come join us for a night of fun, won’t you?

Both the board and member meetings have been rescheduled for January 23rd in their respective time slots. Hope to see you there!

January 23rd, 7:00 pm – Member Meeting

Join us for the fun as Carol DuBosch presents the many possibilities for using your at to make unique envelopes for your everyday mail! We all love to see our name “in lights”, and creatively addressing envelopes to friends and family is a great way to let them shine and know they are special.

Carol will share simple techniques to make your mail a piece of art and share her large collection of decorated envelopes.

Carol regularly enters and wins awards in the annual Graceful Envelope Contest, She will present slides of her past entries, with sketches and drafts to show the design development.

Top Ten Reasons for Lettering Envelopes:

  • 1. You never have to decide what to write (names and addresses are given).
  • 2. Nobody will be offended by your choice of words.
  • 3. Choosing the right paper isn’t a problem – commercial envelopes are just fine.
  • 4. Only knowing one letter style is not a problem.
  • 5. You have a practical place to try out new “hands”.
  • 6. You can quickly get your efforts out of view – pop them in the mail.

…for 7, 8, 9, 10 and MORE join us for Carol DuBosch’s presentation on “Envelope Art”.

Robert Beall (aka the Stamp Man) will also join us to present and sell his extensive collection of vintage US postage stamps.

Handwriting is not dead! Learn the elegant Italic style of writing that was originally developed during the Renaissance, popularized by Lloyd Reynolds of Reed College, and further developed for the schools by Portlanders, Inga Dubay and Barbara Getty.

Italic is a practical handwriting style that can be easily and quickly written with a regular pen for informal use, or learn to write it with a calligraphy pen for formal occasions. Starting with handwriting basics, we will progress to using calligraphy pens for letter writing, greeting cards, personal journals, addressing envelopes and framed quotes.

No prerequisite. Good hand skills recommended. Course designed for both beginning and continuing students.
