More Information.

Handwriting is not dead! Learn the elegant Italic style of writing that was originally developed during the Renaissance, popularized by Lloyd Reynolds of Reed College, and further developed for the schools by Portlanders, Inga Dubay and Barbara Getty.

Italic is a practical handwriting style that can be easily and quickly written with a regular pen for informal use, or learn to write it with a calligraphy pen for formal occasions. Starting with handwriting basics, we will progress to using calligraphy pens for letter writing, greeting cards, personal journals, addressing envelopes and framed quotes.

No prerequisite. Good hand skills recommended. Course designed for both beginning and continuing students.

An Artists Journal with Calligraphy

Thursdays March 2 – April 28 from 1 – 4pm

Oregon Society of Artists
2185 S.W. Park Place, Portland, Oregon 97205 (adjacent parking lot)

An Artist’s Journal serves as an informal path for artists to sharpen their skills as they reflect on daily life.

We will explore several types of artist journals such as a writing a daily poem or a daily sketch, recording a trip, documenting the birds or plants you find. A good journal combines the skills of the illustrator, the calligrapher, the writer, the bookbinder, the graphic designer, the poet, the researcher, and the travel writer. With a focus on how to incorporate your own art practice into a journal format, we will cover: basic bookbinding skills, (so you can make your own journals,) calligraphy techniques, page design, and writing skills.

$200 8/weeks Materials Fee $25

To sign up for Marilyn’s class please call the OSA office 503-228-0706 or email info@oregonsocietyofartists.com
